SUMMARY:
Lucy Medina is on trial for allegedly assaulting her then- husband of 20 years, Luis Medina, by cutting his neck with a kn1fe on July 17, 2020, in their Lawrence apartment. Luis had surgery and survived, but told his medical providers that the wounds to his neck were self-inflicted. In August of 2021, Lucy Medina was indicted and charged with Assault &Battery WITH DANGEROUS WEAPON, SERIOUS BODILY INJURY c265 §15A (c) (i) and ASSAULT ON FAMILY / HOUSEHOLD MEMBER c265 §13M(a). Lucy was released on her own recognizance awaiting trial, which began 3/3/26.

Luis Medina has never given his account of what happened that night, but the defense has raised self-defense/justification, and in fact, Luis Medina's attorney sent a letter to the court in 2021 that the defense intends to introduce at trial, which says, “Mr. Medina firmly believes that if Defendant was the source of his injuries, she acted in self-defense. He is adamant that Defendant committed no crime.”

In Brennan's opening statement, he began by saying: He beat her. He beat her for 28 years. 5 mos after they started dating, her started beating her. He robbed her of her dignity, her self respect and her ability to protect herself.

The Defense plans to have an expert testify about PTSD and battered women’s syndrome. A forensic psychologist hired by the defense is expected to testify that the Medinas’ relationship was “parasitic and toxic.”
