The fifth of the seven songs recorded in Elvis' short three day session at RCA's Studio B in Hollywood during late March 1972 was "Fool" as song which would become the opening track of his first studio album of 1973 and the unofficial title track. The album was officially released as "Elvis" with the front cover art depicting a still from the recent Aloha show and listing a selection of the tracks on the album proclaiming beneath Elvis "including.......and many others" and since the first track listed was "Fool" the album became known as Elvis (including Fool).
The back cover art was typical of Elvis albums of the period denoting other recent Elvis album releases but somehow RCA managed to get the track listing in the wrong order!!
Only two tracks were recorded on 28 March 1972, the middle of three nights of recordings with the first being "Burning Love" and "Fool" the other. Elvis had the master of "Fool" recorded in just two takes and with no false starts both takes were complete versions.
From the seven tracks recorded over these three nights all but one, "Burning Love" were selected to have orchestral overdubs added before release. "Always On My Mind", Fool", "For The Good Times", "It's A Matter Of Time", "Separate Ways" and "Where Do I Go From Here?" had their orchestral overdubs, arranged by Glen D. Hardin, added on 8 May 1972.
However, despite the cost time and effort it would have taken to add these overdubs only "For The Good Times" and "Where Do I Go From Here?" were first released with the overdubs intact. "Always On My Mind" and "Fool" were released after having most of the overdubs removed with the originally overdubbed version of "Always On My Mind" finally released as the title track of an early RCA Elvis CD in 1985. An edited version of the overdubbed version of "Fool" was released in 1980 on the vinyl edition of silver boxset "Elvis Aron Presley" with a longer edited version on the cassette edition. This unedited version remains officially unreleased. This version is included at the end of this compilation.
"It's a Matter of Time" and "Separate Ways" had their orchestral overdubs completely removed before release and the original orchestral overdubbed versions still remain officially unreleased.
As with all of these videos, to get the most out of the re-edited audio, I highly recommend you use ear /headphones and turn the volume up as much as you dare!
