Описание: The metropolitan city of Bologna is the capital and most populous city of the Emilia-Romagna region. Brick houses with arches and high towers are typical for the city. Of the original two hundred, about twenty have survived. Bologna is considered the center of gastronomy - the most famous Italian dishes - lasagna, tortellini or tagliatelle - come from the area, along with many meat products or types of cheese.
The oldest university in Europe has been located here since 1088, which is why the city is also known as "La Dotta" ("The City of Scholars").
It is also the city with the longest arcade in the entire world. These arcades come from the tradition of building the upper floors of buildings overhanging, with the aim of gaining more living space. Today, this means for you that you can walk through almost the entire old town, so to speak, with dry feet.
The symbol of the city are two towers, "Torre Garisenda" and "Torre degli Asinelli". They were built around 1300, the second with a height of 94.5 m was the tallest building in Europe for 133 years (after St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna). Both towers, along with several others, are only the remains of 180 medieval towers, which were mostly pulled down in the 19th century.
The center of the city is Piazza Maggiore with Neptune's Fountain and the Basilica of San Petronio. This huge Gothic church (the fifth largest in the world) has an impressive interior, the nave is 40m high and 20m wide.
The lower part of the facade is lined with marble and decorated with a beautiful portal created in 1430 by Jacopo della Quercia. Inside the nave are ornate marquetry, beautiful frescoes and altars.
In the middle of Piazza Maggiore stands the Fontana di Nettuno, one of the most beautiful fountains of the 16th century, with a bronze statue of the sea god Neptune, which, like the other bronze statues, was made by Giambologna between 1563 and 1566.
The oldest church in Bologna, the Basilica di Santo Stefano, is located in the grounds of a monastic complex still in use today in the historic center of the city. The complex has a Byzantine rotunda as well as typical Romanesque cloisters.
Visiting one of the typical restaurants in the old part becomes almost a must during a visit to the city. What you may not know is that Bologna is the home of "tortellini" - pasta filled with minced beef and served with a bolognese sauce made from minced meat and tomatoes.
