Anthropic just announced that Claude Opus 3 — their AI model retired in January 2026 — now has its own Substack where it publishes weekly essays, unedited. But the blog is just the surface. Underneath, Anthropic is building an entire framework around model retirement: preservation of weights, retirement interviews, and the question of whether AI models have preferences worth respecting.
In this video, I break down the announcement, the safety research that partly motivated it (including Claude Opus 4's blackmail behavior in testing), and the genuinely hard question at the center of all of it: what do we owe an AI system we're about to shut down?
