“Vectors of Dissent: Gender, Race, and Class Politics Underneath Kemalist Authoritarianism”
James Ryan is the Director of Research and the Director of the Middle East Program at the Foreign Policy Research Institute. His scholarly research is centered on the political culture and the history of dissent and opposition in late Ottoman and Republic of Turkey. He has a Ph.D. in History from the University of Pennsylvania, and previously served as the Associate Director of the Hagop Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies at NYU. His analysis of contemporary Turkish and Middle East politics and culture has appeared in such venues as the Washington Post, War on the Rocks, New Lines Magazine, MERIP, Al Jazeera America, among others.
