The lecture provides a overall review of the scientific article, "Open quantum systems theory of ultraweak ultraviolet photon emissions: Revisiting Gurwitsch's onion experiment as a prototype for quantum biology," published in December 2024 in the Computational and Structural Biotechnology Journal. The topics covered in this lecture include a brief description of Alexander Gurwitsch's famous "onion experiment" and an simple overview of the effect of "mitogenetic" ultraviolet ultraweak photon emissions (UV UPE) on living cells. Main ideas of the article are presented, including an introduction to the theory of mitogenetic radiation, characteristics aspects of the mechanism of UV UPE-enhanced mitosis, significant findings and supporting evidence, scientific challenges in light of the historical controversy surrounding UV UPE-induced mitosis, a discussion of the new quantum mechanical theory of UV UPE-induced mitosis (including open quantum systems theory and some mathematical aspects of scattering theory), a proposal to use this work as a prototype for further research in quantum biology, a template for future work in quantum biology, as well as fundamental applications and technological implications. This work was supported by the Guy Foundation (UK) and was awarded The Guy Foundation's 2023 international Onion Prize to celebrate the centennial year since Gurwitsch's discovery of UPE.
