On September 20th, the 128th Constitutional Amendment Bill, 2023, known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam (नारी शक्ति वंदन अधिनियम), was passed in the Lok Sabha and the next day in the Rajya Sabha, introducing a 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha, state legislative assemblies, and the NCT of Delhi Assembly. This includes reservations for SC/ST women. The bill received overwhelming support, with 454 votes for and 2 against in the Lok Sabha and 215-0 in the Rajya Sabha. However, due to pending delimitation, this change won't affect the 2024 elections, which redraft constituency boundaries. With the 2021 census yet to occur, it's expected to be in action by 2029. Some opposition members and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi questioned the wait, noting that Indian women have anticipated this for over a decade.
