Novel Conversation - with Mara Purl & Sherryl Woods
What makes Women's Fiction & Romance series wildly popular? Why do they make such compelling media series for radio and television?
Two pioneers of the small-town-romance-womens-fiction series share their secrets!
Sherryl Woods - https://sherrylwoods.com
New York Times bestselling author of "Stories From the Heart" has penned more than 150 books! She writes about the earnest desires of characters who stick to core values while seeking the right relationships and a deep sense of home. Two of her iconic novel series have become equally beloved television series, Chesapeake Shores and Sweet Magnolias.
Mara Purl - https://www.marapurl.com
Amazon bestselling author of "The Journey from Head to Heart" brings her readers a saga of characters who struggle to find their best lives and win their way through to deep happiness and a clear sense of purpose. Mara wrote more than 100 radio drama episodes of her ground-breaking show Milford-Haven U.S.A. that reached 4.5 million listeners on the BBC before converting her saga into a best-selling novel series that has earned more than 90 book awards.
These two author friends, whose paths criss-crossed for years before they met, discuss their mutual backgrounds in journalism, their passion for research, their belief that even if we stumble, we can find our way with the help and encouragement of family and friends.
Part II – Novels & Scripts
In this segment, they share their journeys to become novelists. Each reached a point where they needed to transition away from journalism.
Sherryl felt being a reporter was no longer fun. Bravely quitting, she wrote novel proposals and submitted them. Working at a day-job while she waited, she found the transition tough but stuck with it and after a couple of years, received offers from publishers.
Mara felt that in her favorite journalistic pieces she was “preaching to the choir,” and that engaging readers through fictional stories would give her the freedom to share insights as well as research. Mostly, she felt the need to reconnect to her creativity. She shocked her family, friends, and colleagues by quitting her newspaper job and headed to Hollywood, where she began writing scripts.
Both talk about the willingness to give up the security of existing jobs and summoning the courage to leap into “the unknown” to write their own stories. Buffeted by rejection and criticism, they found enough belief in themselves to persist.
They end on the positive note of the magic of reading—the places book take us, how they cherish their readers, and love to share their stories.
