What does a skin contact white wine actually mean in Australia in 2025? The answer is far less clear cut than it once was.
When we first took a Deep Dive into the category back in 2019, skin contact whites sat firmly on the fringe.
Fast forward to today, and winemakers across the spectrum, from natural to conventionally minded are experimenting with time on skins in wildly different ways.
Tasted blind by our expert panel, the wines span an enormous range of colour, texture and flavour. Some are deep, grippy and almost red-like; others are subtle, lifted and light enough to pass for a classic white. What unites them is intent: skin contact as a tool, not a rule.
