The Boring Company to face Metro Council questions in public for first time

Описание: For the first time, The Boring Company (TBC) will face questions from Metro Nashville Council committee members publicly this week, about the Music City Loop.

“This is the first time that all council members will have the opportunity to have their questions answered,” said Metro Councilmember Delishia Porterfield, who helped arrange the meeting.

The special meeting for the Metro Transportation and Infrastructure Committee was called for Thursday, Feb. 19, as Elon Musk’s Boring Company has moved swiftly since the summer to secure permits and begin preliminary work on the project. Even though it is a committee meeting, all metro council members are able to attend, as well as the public.

The company’s latest blog post, issued every two months, says it is waiting on only a handful of permits before tunneling can begin. The more than 10-mile underground system- backed by Gov. Bill Lee- is planned to stretch from Nashville International Airport to downtown, with potential expansions to Broadway and Nissan Stadium.

The route, traveled by Tesla electric vehicles, would run beneath state land and be privately funded, limiting the city’s direct oversight.

Porterfield said TBC had not met with all council members, and declined her invitation to meet earlier on in the process.

“At that point in time, the Boring Company declined a meeting,” she said, referring to her initial invitation.

After months without a meeting, Porterfield filed a resolution in December condemning what she described as the company’s lack of transparency. The resolution has since been deferred to be heard in March.

“They (TBC) have been meeting with certain council members, but it had been on like a one-off basis,” she said.

Porterfield said she has since met with TBC representatives, last week, and plans to meet with them again following the public meeting Thursday.

The Boring Company has said it has held numerous community meetings, engaged with more than 70 local organizations and maintained regular contact with Metro and state department heads. TBC said it's answered more than 120 emails. However, it's not known how many inquiries via email the company received.

State Sen. Jack Johnson posted on X about a tour he and other lawmakers took of the Vegas Loop in Las Vegas.

In November, TBC leaders hosted a virtual, audio-only town hall where members of the public could submit questions, with selected inquiries answered during the discussion.

Thursday’s meeting will mark the first time company representatives will appear before the Metro Council in person and in a public setting. The session is expected to address concerns ranging from safety, flooding and environmental impacts to tunnel expansion, congestion reduction and even the possibility of the project being abandoned or curtailed.

It will also cover many of TBC's highlights of the project, including job creation, a new transportation option for Nashville, and easing traffic.
