Alki Beach is one of the most popular places in Puget Sound. There are many restaurants, cafes and picnic spots with nice views.
Originally habited by the Native Americans of the Duwamish tribe, it became known as the birthplace of Seattle when the Denny Party landed here in 1851. They settlers called it "New York Alki," from a Chinook word meaning "by and by" or "someday."
The "New York" was eventually dropped, but the name "Alki" remains. A ferry service began in 1888 and made it a popular weekend outing place for Seattleites.
By 1902, the beach was so popular that it became the destination for a new electric street railway line from Seattle. The street car ran from 1916-1940. Today it still serves as a favorite spot for bikers, joggers, families, retirees, and everyone in between.
