See UPDATE at the bottom.
This video showing the basic construction of a negative pressure vent system that draws air out of the toilet tank and pushes it to the OEM blackwater vent pipe. This system has worked extremely well for us. No more odor!
Parts List For Powered Vent System, Thetford Recirculating Toilet
12 volt fan. 2” square. Corners rounded off for better fit inside the 2” rubber coupling. Thin wall 1” PVC pipe was used.
This list starts at the toilet and lists each part sequentially.
1 ½”x1” PVC adapter
1” PVC pipe, short piece
1” 90 degree elbow
1” PVC pipe (this goes from the above fitting through the side of lavatory cabinet)
2”x1” PVC adapter
2” black rubber coupling with hose clamps (fan is inserted inside this coupling)
2”x1” PVC adapter
1” PVC pipe, short piece
1” PVC coupler (the bilge hose inserts here. It could be inserted directly into the adapter but a screw could not be added to secure the hose)
Bilge hose, 1 ¼” ID x 1 5/8” OD (purchased from wally world). A 2’ section was used.
1 ¼” x1” PVC Tee. This goes inline with the existing 1 ¼” PVC drain vent. The 1” part of the Tee is facing downward and the bilge hose attaches here. The original drain vent pipe must be cut, then removed to the outside. It is then cut to length and everything reassembled. No glue was used on this fitting. Water should NEVER be in this area and it was a very tight fit.
UPDATE 05/28/20
Just got back from another 21 day, 5,200 mile trip. I now have about 17,000 miles and 64 days of use on this mod. The power vent has worked perfectly until it failed on this last trip! Let me explain... For three days (two nights) we were unable to dump but were traveling every day. I had NEVER given consideration to what could happen if traveling with the mod the way it was. It was running while we towed the camper (had never been a problem...empty). But the sloshing of the water/waste can easily slosh into the vent elbow coming up from the toilet. When we stopped the third night at a full hook up site, I noticed the vent fan was NOT running. So, after dumping the toilet I opened up my vent system (very easy to do...only a screwdriver needed). To my surprise the fan was wet and water/stuff was puddles around it. Which quickly ran out the pipe and into my shoe as I sat there wadded up to access the cabinet! :) I ended up installing a 1" PVC ball valve just inside the cabinet and ahead of the vent fan. Problem solved. I also had a new fan shipped to me and installed it at the same time.
Now if I need to travel and am unable to empty the toilet before rolling, I turn off the little fan and close the valve. No harm, no foul... I just wish I had thought about this possibility when I originally built this modification. At least now I now I can travel with a full tank and not worry about any splash finding its way into my vent line and into the little 2" in-line fan!
