But what lies beyond the headlines?

Behind these scams is a far more complex story one that unfolds in non descript rural heartlands, touches on migration, caste, and class, and reflects the aspirations and frustrations of a generation navigating limited opportunities, while at the same time building into a more organized network in South East Asian countries.

In many cases, the skills, languages, and networks that power these scams are shaped by migration journeys, informal work, and the social structures of the places people come from.

So how do these scam economies actually take shape?
