A pair of twins who travel across the stars and visit different worlds arrive in Teyvat. They find that it is ablaze with war, and as they attempt to leave, they are stopped by a mysterious god who captures one of the twins and seals away the other one. Some undisclosed amount of time later the sealed twin, referred to as the "Traveler", awakens and meets Paimon. The pair decide to travel to Mondstadt, the closest city, in an attempt to find the Traveler's missing twin.

Paimon and Traveler arrive at Mondstadt, and encounter a dragon named Stormterror which attacks the city. Aided by an unknown entity later revealed to be Venti, Traveler fends off the Stormterror and is recognized by Jean, acting grandmaster of the Knights of Favonius. Traveler joins the Knights to restore balance to the region which was upset after the attack, and discovers Stormterror's true identity as Dvalin, an ancient guardian of Mondstadt. Encountering Venti, he informs Traveler that by playing a holy lyre to Dvalin will quell his anger. However Traveler is beaten to the Lyre by the Fatui, diplomatic agents from Snezhnaya, and is framed for robbery. Traveler reunites with Jean and is joined by Diluc, a tavern owner who helped hide Traveler after being framed. Together they retrieve the lyre and repair it. Venti plays the lyre to summon Dvalin, but it is discovered that he is under the influence of the Abyss Order; Dvalin reveals Venti's true identity as Barbatos before returning to his lair. The group pursue him to his lair and free him from the Abyss Order's influence. After returning the lyre, the Traveler and Venti are ambushed by a group of Fatui led by La Signora, the 8th of the elite Eleven Fatui Harbingers, and Venti's Gnosis, a conduit that allows him to use magic, is stolen by Signora.
