Bordeaux does not often deliver three great vintages in a row.

But 2018, 2019, and 2020 did exactly that.

The 2019 Château Faugères sits right in the middle of that run, and many producers believe it may be the most complete of the three. Warm but balanced. Ripe but not overdone. Structured but already expressive.

Faugères sits on the border of Saint-Émilion and Castillon, a massive estate with serious terroir and serious investment. Since Silvio Denz purchased the property in 2005, the winemaking and vineyard work have been dialed in at a very high level. Gravity-fed winery. Hand harvesting. Meticulous sorting. Fifty percent new French oak. This is not a casual operation.

The 2019 blend is led by Merlot with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon in support. In the glass, the wine is blasting with fruit. Dark berries, plum, and spice layered over polished oak and that distinctive Right Bank plushness. It is powerful but not heavy. Structured but generous. This is classic modern Bordeaux done right.

Vinous awarded it 95 points.

Here is the part that matters.

It is under $40.

For a 95 point Bordeaux from one of the great modern three-vintage runs, that is a slam dunk. You get serious pedigree, serious winemaking, and serious vintage quality without crossing into luxury pricing.

If you love Bordeaux and want something you can actually open with dinner rather than bury in the cellar for twenty years, this is a very smart move.
