STORYLINE:
Displaced Palestinians in the Gaza Strip were divided about the outcome of Thursday's inaugural Board of Peace meeting in Washington.

US President Donald Trump announced at the meeting that nine members have agreed to pledge $7 billion toward a Gaza relief package and five countries have agreed to deploy troops as part of an international stabilization force for the war-battered Palestinian territory.

In a makeshift camp for displaced people in Khan Younis, some Palestinians were optimistic about the meeting, while others did not expect it to have a tangible impact on their suffering in Gaza.

Faraj Abu Anzeh, a displaced man from Khan Younis said that the meetings in Egypt or in the US were useless.

“They deceive people by saying that there is a solution and that peace is possible," he said. "It's all catchy slogans."

Mweanwhile Salem Abu Obeida, a man displaced from Khan Younis expressed hope the meeting would be fruitful.

"We thank all the countries that have gathered in the Board of Peace and collected money for us," he said. "God bless them."

"We hope that peace will help the Palestinian people to achieve their ambitions and that peace will prevail worldwide. We hope that there will be no more wars."

The dollars promised, while significant, represent a small fraction of the estimated $70 billion needed to rebuild the territory decimated after two years of war between Israel and Hamas.

While Trump praised allies for making the commitments of funding and troops, he offered no detail on when the pledges would be implemented.
