Urchin barrens have formed along the south east side of Saturna Island and this raw dive video shows one section in Boundary Pass where kelp has been severely affected. Beautiful, otherworldly, yet destructive to the entire bull kelp ecosystem, an overpopulation of urchins affects foraging habitat for the Southern Resident killer whales, salmon and hundreds of invertebrates. SIMRES is looking to scientists and researchers, government organizations, companies, and individuals to find solutions to restore the bull kelp ecosystem.
