Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has strongly opposed the proposed Security and Intelligence Agencies Bill, 2025, warning that it could concentrate excessive power within the National Security apparatus and potentially lead to abuse of citizens’ rights.

Speaking in Parliament, he questioned the rationale behind the bill, asking, “What mischief is this bill trying to cure?” He argued that there must be a dedicated Minister for National Security rather than expanding responsibilities under the Interior Ministry.

Afenyo-Markin further stated that the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak, is already overburdened, and that restructuring without proper safeguards could create governance and accountability challenges.

The debate over the bill has sparked concerns about oversight, civil liberties, and the balance of power within Ghana’s security framework.
