Large facilities throw away money and energy on inefficiencies like steam loss and degrading motors, but battery-free IoT sensors could help with identifying problems as soon as they occur without the need for routine maintenance.
The University of Michigan startup Everactive is currently piloting 40 steam trap sensors without a trap failure in 6 months. This is a major success as a single failed trap can cause carbon dioxide leakage and a cost in the tens of thousands for repair.
Leading the research is Everactive’s co-founder and co-chief technology officer, David Wentzloff, also an associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science at U-M.
