The East Indies seem a likely target for the Japanese to attack due to it's plentiful amount of natural resources. With the increasing threat of the Empire of Japan lingering on the horizon, the Netherlands takes the step to declare war as a precaution.
But Japan's invasion force is one to be reckoned with and the KNIL forces are cut off from their main homeland. It will be very difficult for them to overthrow their new enemy.
