Although wartime sexual violence against men occurs more frequently than is commonly assumed, its dynamics are remarkably underexplored, and male survivors’ experiences remain particularly overlooked. This reality is poignant in northern Uganda, where sexual violence against men during the early stages of the conflict was geographically widespread, yet now accounts of those incidents are not just silenced and neglected locally but also widely absent from analyses of the war. Based on his new book published by University of California Press in November 2020, Schulz will share his findings.
This was Philipp Schulz’ keynote presentation at our online session on ‘Masculinities in Times of Conflict’ on 18 March 2021. Philipp Schulz is a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Institute for Intercultural and International Studies (InIIS) at the University of Bremen. He obtained his PhD from the Transitional Justice Institute (TJI), Ulster University. His work focuses on the gender dynamics of political violence, armed conflicts and post-conflict transitions, with a a particular focus on masculinities, femininities and sexual violence. Philipp is the Principal Investigator of a three-year research project on sexual violence and political agency in Northern Uganda and Sri Lanka. His recent book ‘Male Survivors of Wartime Sexual Violence: Perspectives from Northern Uganda’ is published with University Press, and is available in Open Access. The book has been shortlisted for the Conflict Research Society (CRS) book of the year award 2020.
