Looking for ways to help your student build phonemic awareness skills? We can help! Join Alabama Reading Initiative literacy specialists as we show and tell specific phonemic awareness activities you can use to help your student improve their phonemic awareness and identify the sounds within spoken words.

In this video, Alabama Reading Initiative literacy specialists give tips for helping your student build phonemic awareness skills through multisensory and multimodal experiences, such as manipulating the sounds (or phonemes) in their name, breaking down (or segmenting) the sounds in words, using their bodies to show sounds in words, and using manipulatives (such as beans or cereal) to show the sounds in words. With these activities, you can support your student’s phonemic awareness development and set them on the path to becoming a proficient reader and speller.
