Klerksdorp, a city in South Africa's North-West Province, is known for its mining and agricultural industries, and in conjunction with Rustenburg, it makes up the economic powerhouse of the North-West Province.
The town's steady growth continued until November 1885, but the discovery of gold, both in the Klerksdorp district and in the Witwatersrand area some 160 kilometres to the east, marked a pivotal moment, irrevocably altering the town's future development.
