"Punk has had a tense relationship with education and formal learning. Many punks faced societal hardship from adopting counter-hegemonic ethics that cast them outside the “normal”. However punks are inquisitive and resourceful, utilizing DIY to create and support a wide-range of outside-curriculum spaces. I believe the experiences of punks in education establishes a clear punk positionality that has yet to be fully examined. I posit that an educator that holds a punk positionality is one who works against hegemonic, hierarchical structures by bringing their authentic self to their learning and teaching through their practice, pedagogy, and reflexivity. To understand how a positionality rooted in punk can be a catalyst to high-quality educators, I will be using Thomas Philip’s concept of an Ideology in Pieces that aims to balance and understand the driving forces for individual educators by comparing sociological and constructivist approaches, eventually landing on a collected ideology in pieces.
Ideology in pieces works at the intersection of sociological and teacher-as-learner, or constructivist, approaches by enabling an analysis of individual teachers’ learning and transformation while situating such sensemaking in practices and discourses that stabilize or challenge structures of power in society. (Philip. 2011.)"
