Annette and Lance Pugh first came to Ashland, Oregon in 1971. They were among the first wave of folks who blazed a trail to Southern Oregon in the 1970s. Instead of settling in the forests, the Pughs stayed in town and bought Lithia Grocery where they served Moon Tea, an Avocado sandwich with sprouts and vegan cheese on Manna wheat. Hippies from all over the region would come to Ashland for natural foods and community.
In this interview, Annette talks about the Ashland Creek floods, the IOOF building and old Ashland Armory - how she and Lance made their way and came to love this place.
Annette also talks of the many changes she's seen in Ashland, about belonging and not belonging, about Southern Oregon University, Florence Schneider and about the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
Lance Pugh passed away at the age of 61 on May 23, 2010. Annette Pugh died on April 23, 2019 at the age of 71.
