McKinnon Flats Fall Hike
It may not be as pretty as a lush summer day, but let’s take a quick hike through the lower portion of McKinnon Flats just East of Calgary, Alberta. On the hike today Akira, a five month old Golden Lab.
Here we will go back in time about 700 years starting with the remains of a farming tractor outside the historic and abandoned LK Ranch circa 1892.
The Blackfoot Tribe indicated that the place was of cultural significance decades previous, but it wasn’t until the catastrophic floods of 2013 washed away top soil and rock to reveal an archaeological site.
Here, below the walls surrounding the bow river some 700 to 150 years ago, Blackfoot Indigenous People’s ran Buffalo off the cliffs and on the valley floor where they would be slaughter and used for food, shelter, weapons and spiritual needs. Buffalo Bones, Fire Pits, TP Rings and stone cutters and scrappers have been found at this historical Buffalo Hunting Camp.
Today, the site is a popular fishing spot, hiking, mountain biking and birding area.
Along the various trails that criss-cross and sometimes get washed out, you will find a 1920 Ford Pickup half buried in the prairie soil and a 1955 Dodge crashed on its side along with various historical farm equipment.
But the real surprise here is who is actually hiking this trail in near freezing temperatures!
We will definitely be back to explore this area in the warm summer months and find more surprises!
