My first paying gigs were $50 per hour, so to become full time, I needed to make the equivalent to the $600 per week I was making as an electrical engineer (it was a beginning engineering salary where I was)

So after I got my first residency performing 3 hours a night, which I got $150 plus tips, I started looking for more gigs. And I was able to find more that filled up my Fridays, Saturdays, Wednesdays, and sometimes Tuesdays. I even started an open mic night on Sundays at a local bar.

So I was able to quit my job and just play music full time. This freed up my time and energy to work on more music related projects: learning new songs, making YouTube videos, traveling, and some administrative stuff like making invoices and taxes.

Then eventually I moved to Las Vegas, which enabled me to get even more gigs, and even higher paying gigs. But through this process I didn’t learn about how money worked, so I spent more than I made and I was in a lot of debt. After reading some books about money and finances, I was able to get rid of all of my debt and I started investing regularly.

This shift in mindset allowed me to now take breaks from performing so much to go travel when I wanted to. So I did a backpacking trip with some friends to Europe for a month and that opened my eyes to what traveling can do to really open your mind to new experiences. I decided I wanted to be able to travel and play music. And in 2018, I got the call to go overseas. Because my financial situation was very stable, it wasn’t a problem for me to move overseas.

If you’re a musician and think you need to be in debt, that is not true. Debt will make you say “yes” to things that you might not want to do, and say “no” to opportunities that you will want to do. The best option is to be financially independent and stable.
