On a tour of Arizona and New Mexico in September 2014, we spent a day at Carlsbad Caverns NP in NM. We were in the cave a couple hours walking on self-guided trails, had lunch at the restaurant in the visitor center, and stayed long enough to see some of the bat flight in the early evening. The bat flight pictures were taken by my father when he was at the park in 1968.
High ancient sea ledges, deep rocky canyons, flowering cactus, and desert wildlife—treasures above the ground in the Chihuahuan Desert. Hidden beneath the surface are more than 120 caves known at this time in the par. Caves were formed when sulfuric acid dissolved limestone leaving behind caverns of all sizes with many types of formations. Carlsbad Cavern is one of over 300 limestone caves in the area in a fossil reef laid down by an inland sea about 265 million years ago
Carlsbad Cavern is greater than 30 miles. The Big Room is 8.2 acres. It is the largest, single cave chamber by volume in North America. The self-guided, mostly flat trail is 1.25 miles long. Many of the cave formations can be seen from this trail.
