With the legendaries out of the way, we can now move onto the more interesting battles of the post-game.
One major problem I have with Pokémon BW1 has got to be the level curve; during the main story, the final battles of the game cap at Level 54, but then once you enter the post-game, everything takes a massive jump by 10-20 levels, and the game expects you to be at those same levels by the post-game even though your team would probably be around Levels 48-50 by the time you fight the E4. Because of that, everywhere you grind during the post-game, you’re going to be severely underleveled and are constantly going to be out-sped and often one-shot. We can all complain about HGSS’s level curve for being way too low and the final battle in those games capping at Level 50, but at least the curve in those games remain consistent as you battle the gym leaders in the post-game and you have the gym leader rematches to grind your team off of to prepare for the E4/champion rematches in those games (which are scaled poorly) as well as the Red fight, but since there’s no gym leader rematches here, your only method of grinding is beating all of the NPCs in the post-game areas, going to the Battle Stadium in Nimbasa City or Royal Unova (both of which you can only do once a day with a limited amount of trainers,) or training at the Giant Chasm, and you have to grind up by 20 LEVELS to match up well against the E4’s rematch teams. At least here I only had to grind up to the Level 64-68 range to fight Cheren’s team, but the level curve is a major issue elsewhere.
Anyway, I complained about these games’ level curve and how it impacts the battles, but I should be talking about the battle itself. It wasn’t too bad, with the legendaries out of the way and every route in Unova being explored, I got access to all of the TMs locked to the post-game, so I dumped all of my HM moves (barring Sigilyph’s Fly and Carracosta’s Waterfall) and upgraded my team’s coverage, so I had a more broad range of options to approach Cheren’s lineup. Cheren adds a Gigalith and Haxorus to his team, making for some strong additions, and Haxorus got pretty dangerous with its Dragon Gem-boosted Outrage. With some luck and predicted misses (and soft-resets to try again when necessary,) the rest of his lineup was easy enough though.
