What is a Chypre perfume?

Описание: Chypre (pronounced /ʃipʁ/ or /ʃipχ/) is a family perfume that are characterised by a mixture of notes (an accord) comprising:

• top notes
o citrus
• middle notes
o cistus labdanum
• base notes
o mossy-animalic / oakmoss.

Chypres come in many different sub-types such as: woody, fruity, floral, leather and fresh.

The word chypre means Cyprus (the island) in French.

This specific set of notes is associated with the name chypre in perfumery because of Chypre Coty (1917) by François Coty. This is the same Coty who is the name behind today’s global company and at the time was possibly the richest man in France – he gained control of Le Figaro in 1922.

However, the association of the name chypre has a much longer history. Eau De Chypre by P. Guerlain and released in 1840 is probably the first modern chypre but this is practically brand new in comparison with the full history of the chypres.

In classical mythology, Aphrodite the ancient Greek goddess associated with love, beauty, pleasure, passion (and procreation) is said to have been born on Cyprus. Aphrodite worshipers were based there, and it seems reasonable to think that perfumes created in the area would be understood in the context of the goddess of love and beauty.

Archaeological evidence shows that perfume product at an almost industry level has existed on Cyprus for 4,000 years leading to the claim that it is the birthplace of the perfume industry.

Further Cyprus has an abundance of fragrant fauna. This includes Cistus ladanifer (rock rose) which is one of the keynotes in modern Chypres and has been known to have been used by Cypriote perfumers for well over a thousand years. There are tails from the thirteenth century and written records from the 18C of perfumes from Cyprus with these notes.

Taken together we can see Coty created a perfume with Cistus ladanifer as a keynote and called it Chypre.
