‘These Places Look Familiar’ is the fourth full-length album by Stavropol-based ambient producer Timur Lunkov under the moniker iamrw. This release is a conceptual story about a person trying to get home on a dark winter evening, but failing miserably. The thick fog enveloping the city, the hum of air conditioners on the buildings, the lights in people's windows—all this creates the feeling of city life, yet there's no one on the streets. Identical panel buildings are everywhere. These places seem familiar to the protagonist, but he still can't find his way home.
Taking inspiration from various horror soundtracks, 'TPLF' is a dark ambient album that combines elements of drone music, industrial, and post-rock. Dissonant synth pads combine with metallic scrapes, screams, meditative acoustic guitar, and even detuned piano and drum breaks on some tracks.
Using soundtracks from games like Silent Hill, Cry of Fear, Half-Life, and the Resident Evil series as its’ main inspiration and the reference for soundscapes, 'These Places Look Familiar' is the essence and benchmark of modern dark ambient sound.
