Applied Linguistics Lab | East Texas A&M University
Guest Presenter: Dr. Lucy Pickering, Director of Research Integrity and Compliance and Professor of Applied Linguistic, ETAMU
Are you conducting research with children, cognitively impaired adults, or other vulnerable populations? In this presentation, Dr. Pickering breaks down what researchers need to know about working with vulnerable subjects and navigating the Institutional Review Board (IRB) process under 45 CFR 46 (The Common Rule).
This session explains the ethical foundations of IRB review, including the Belmont Principles (Beneficence, Respect for Persons, and Justice), and outlines federal regulations governing human subjects research. We focus specifically on:
• Research with children (assent, parental consent, minimal risk, opt-out waivers)
• Cognitively or decision-impaired adults and assessing consent capacity
• Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA) considerations
• Coercion and undue influence in research design
• Excessive incentives and power imbalances (teacher-student, doctor-patient dynamics)
• Psychological, social, legal, and economic vulnerabilities
• Confidentiality, risk mitigation strategies, and Full Board Review requirements
• IRB consultation processes and when outside expertise is needed
This video is especially relevant for graduate students, faculty researchers, applied linguists, social scientists, education researchers, and anyone preparing an IRB application involving vulnerable populations.
If you are designing a study that touches on sensitive topics, involves minors, or includes participants with diminished decision-making capacity, this session will help you anticipate ethical concerns, strengthen your research design, and prepare for IRB review.
