Presenta un corpo molto compresso ai fianchi ed ha una forma ovaloide, ha una bocca abbastanza piccola, le pinne dorsale e anale sono a forma di ovale ed ampie, la caudale è a delta, dagli angoli arrotondati. Le pinne ventrali si sono filiformi e molto mobili, servono sia come recettori del gusto che come organi tattili. La livrea varia da specie a specie e va dall' azzurro e rosso al verde e giallo marrone con sfumature madreperla. Il disegno presenta strisce verticali o puntini anche qui a seconda della specie. Sono onnivori e accettano secco in scaglie, pellets e fiocchi, artemie saline, larve di zanzara e chironomus, vegetali come spinaci e lattuga bolliti, cetrioli e zucchine.
