Assam polls: BJP banks on governance record and organisational strength for third term

Описание: The ruling BJP-led NDA in Assam is gearing up for the upcoming Assembly elections, banking on its governance record, welfare initiatives and a strong organisational network across the state.

The BJP has steadily expanded its political footprint in Assam since the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, forming its first government in the state in 2016 and improving its tally again in 2021.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has highlighted development projects, welfare schemes for various sections of society and several peace accords with insurgent groups as key achievements of the government. Repeated visits by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the party’s leadership have reinforced the BJP’s “double-engine government” pitch.

However, the ruling alliance could face anti-incumbency in some constituencies, local resentment against sitting MLAs and criticism from opposition parties over governance and corruption allegations. Internal dissent and voter polarisation may also shape the political landscape in the state.
