The Citizenship Act, 1955, is the principal legislation in India that provides a comprehensive framework for the acquisition and determination of Indian citizenship after the commencement of the Constitution (January 26, 1950).

🌟 Key Provisions for Acquisition of Citizenship
The Act outlines five ways a person can acquire Indian citizenship:
By Birth (Section 3): Generally refers to persons born in India, with conditions that have been modified by subsequent amendments.
By Descent (Section 4): Applies to persons born outside India whose parent(s) are Indian citizens, subject to specific registration requirements.
By Registration (Section 5): Applicable to certain categories of persons of Indian origin, those married to Indian citizens, and minor children, who can apply to be registered as citizens after fulfilling residency and other prescribed conditions.
By Naturalisation (Section 6): Can be granted to a foreigner who applies after fulfilling specific qualifications, including a period of residency in India (generally 11 years over the last 14 years, and 12 months immediately preceding the application).
By Incorporation of Territory (Section 7): If any new territory becomes a part of India, the Central Government can specify the persons from that territory who shall be citizens of India.
