Wondering how to cope as a highly sensitive person?
A natural and logical response when we are struggling, and then find out we are highly sensitive, is to then attribute our struggle to our sensitivity, and deduce that the best way forward is to figure out how to be less sensitive... We think that we must learn how to cope with being an HSP, to minimize or deal with our sensitivity, so that we can finally just move past it and be happy.
But the truth is, that the HSP trait is innately part of who we are, and it's only a waste of time and energy to try to rid ourselves of it -- because getting rid of high sensitivity is impossible. It's not something that can be (or needs to be) cured. And approaching this issue by assuming the solution is to become less sensitive, is actually doing more harm than good, even though it seems like a perfectly logical solution.
The better question to be asking yourself is not how to be less sensitive so you can cope, but instead to discover how you can embrace this part of yourself, so that you can thrive with it --- because, the highly sensitive trait isn't going anywhere. Nor is it meant to.
The HSP trait is valuable, and can provide great benefit to your life, if you are willing to accept, respect, and honor it. To live happily and healthfully as a highly sensitive person, you must see the value in your own trait, and genuinely love this part of yourself. Getting to this place may seem like a tall feat if you're currently in a space where you genuinely feel like this trait is a huge burden. I get it. It will take time and personal experience of your own to shift this perspective, and therefore what you are able to experience and accomplish.
But the first step on this journey is to address your mindset about the highly sensitive trait. What (supportive or unsupportive) do you currently hold about life as a highly sensitive person (HSP)?
