Every spring, birders flock to the Texas Gulf Coast to witness the awe-inspiring Neotropical bird migration. This year at Sabine Woods, bird numbers were noticeably lower. Many believe that favorable southerly winds allowed the birds to bypass the coast and continue directly to their northern breeding grounds.
In this video, I share the species I saw this year, including a few gems, and reflect on what this quieter migration might mean for birds—and for us.
It’s a reminder that birds need more than just remote sanctuaries—they need safe, nourishing habitats everywhere, especially around our homes. By planting native plants and rewilding our yards, we can support migratory birds and countless other wildlife species.
🌿 Rewilding is not just a conservation trend—it’s a lifeline.
