While the U.S. remains Canada's largest export market, there has been an increasing shift towards the Asia Pacific for economic and trade diversification. After a review of Canada's current relationship with various regional nations, the new CIGI paper "A Policy Mismatch: Canada and the United States in the Asia-Pacific Region" is discussed. Where are the greatest opportunities for Canada in the region? While Japan and the Philippines are eager to engage, in a broader sense, there is an opportunity for Canada to move beyond economic relationships to contribute to regional stability through "maritime diplomacy" with ongoing and proactive methods of confidence building.
