After Prime Minister Mark Carney claimed that Canada’s immigration system was “under control” on Tuesday, Conservative MPs targeted the immigration minister with their questions in the House of Commons Wednesday, with several calling for her dismissal after a year at her post.
Though Immigration Minister Lena Diab admitted her role is “never easy” – calling it “one of the toughest jobs in government” – she echoed Carney’s comment, saying, “we’re taking back control on the immigration system” and returning to "sustainable levels.”
Conservative MP Melissa Lantsman argued the Liberal sentiments, calling Diab “out of her depth,” claiming she has “no ability to restore order.”
Lantsman, among other colleagues, noted a report that “86 per cent of rejected asylum-seekers remain in Canada” while Canadians struggle with housing, health care and employment issues.” Former immigration ministers Sean Fraser and Marc Miller stood up in Parliament to defend Diab and her efforts.
Conservative MPs remarked the Liberals were using the previous “failed” immigration ministers to help Diab with the “mess” they allegedly created for her.
