I worked with a company for 20 years and many people asked me, “Subomi, why did you stay and how was the company able to retain you?" I’ll share some principles with you.
1. Be interested. Your staff need to know you genuinely care about them. Do you know where they live, their motivations, their stresses and frustrations? Get to know your staff.
2. Acknowledge contributions. That your staff makes something look easy doesn’t mean that it is. So, validate him/her and say, “Well done” every now and then.
3. Demonstrate vision. Your staff need to know the company is heading somewhere and is not just stuck in a rut. So, communicate vision often, set goals and please achieve them.
4. Teach and train. Let your staff get stuff from you that they can’t learn in a book.
5. Communicate clearly. Don’t let your staff feel like they are out of the loop or that there is some hidden information flying around the company.
6. Delegate. Set parameters like a budget, deliverables or signing limits and then give your staff the space to execute.
7. Insist on results. Run a strict meritocracy and let your staff know that their efforts will be rewarded.
