MOCO Museum Amsterdam – Artist’s Reflection about Moco Masters(모코미술관 - 모코 마스터스와 예술가의 고뇌)

모코는 “젊고 다양한 관객을 끌어들여 예술을 보다 쉽게 다가갈 수 있게 만든다”는 사명을 2016년 개관과 함께 수행해 왔다. 2023년에는 769, 000 명이 방문했으며, 이는 이러한 비전이 다양한 사람들에게 울림을 주고 있음을 입증한다.

전시실에 들어서면 “모코 마스터스” 순환 전시가 앤디 워홀, 장‑미셸 바스키아, 키스 해링,제프 쿤스 ,데미엔  허스트 등 시각 문화의 판도를 바꾼 아이콘들을 한데 모아 놓았다. 여기에 뱅크시의 “풍선 달린 소녀”, KAWS, 끊임없이 변하는 모코 가든의 거리 예술 작품들이 어우러져, 팝 문화 비판, 정치적 메시지, 눈부신 미학이 결합된 현대적 해석을 선보인다.

전통미술을 품은 한국 예술가 입장에서, 과거의 벽이 현재의 캔버스에 속삭이는 이 공간은 나에게 성역과도 같았다. 모코는 과거를 통해 오늘의 진실을 드러내면서도 우리가 아직 꿈꾸는 세상을 예언적으로 그려낼 수 있음을 확인시켜 주었다.

Stepping into the MOCO Museum on Honthorststraat, I am immediately struck by the dialogue between the building’s past and its present program. The museum lives in the historic Villa Alsberg, a 1904 townhouse designed by Eduard Cuypers – the nephew of the architect of the Rijksmuseum and Amsterdam Central Station.

The crisp early twentieth century façade frames a whirlwind of contemporary works, a physical reminder that the future is built on layers of history.

Moco’s own purpose resonates with my own belief that the artist must be a prophet, showing the world “as it is and as it should be.” Since its opening in 2016, the independent museum has pursued a mission to attract younger, broader audiences and make art accessible to everyone.

In 2023 it welcomed 769,000 visitors, proof that this vision reaches people from all walks of life.

Inside, the “Moco Masters” rotation gathers icons who have already reshaped visual culture – Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst – alongside the rebellious language of street art: Banksy’s “Girl with Balloon,” KAWS, and the ever evolving Moco Garden installations.

Their works fuse pop culture critique, political commentary and dazzling aesthetics, offering a modern interpretation that links the radical gestures of the 1960s with today’s digital age concerns.

For me, a Korean artist whose imagination is rooted in both traditional heritage and futuristic wonders, Moco becomes a sanctuary where the past laden walls whisper to the present canvases. It affirms that art can reveal today’s truths while prophetically sketching the world we still hope to create.
