అక్క మహదేవి కథ Akka mahadevi katha Sivarathri special 2026 telugu videos ithihasam channel Akka Mahadevi was one of the most extraordinary and fearless women in Indian spiritual history. She is one of the most celebrated Veerashaiva / Lingayat saints and poets of the 12th century in Karnataka.
Her story in short (the most commonly told version):
Birth & early life
Born around 1130–1160 CE in Udutadi village (near Shikaripura, Shivamogga district, Karnataka).
From childhood she was deeply devoted to Lord Shiva (whom she called Chenna Mallikarjuna – “My beautiful jasmine-lord”).
Marriage & renunciation
She was extremely beautiful. The local king (Kaushika / Kaleshwara) was attracted to her beauty and forced her into marriage.
Akka Mahadevi accepted the marriage only on one condition: that she would remain devoted only to Shiva and the king would have no rights over her body or mind.
The king could not accept this and tried to force her.
She rejected all worldly life, renounced clothes, ornaments, everything — and walked away completely naked.
Covered only by her hair
To preserve modesty and yet remain true to her vow of complete detachment, she covered her body only with her long hair.
This act shocked society — but she declared:“The body is just an illusion. True modesty is in the mind. I am already married to Chenna Mallikarjuna — no man can claim me.”
Journey & vachanas
She wandered through forests, towns, and pilgrimage places — singing powerful devotional poems called vachanas (free-verse spiritual poetry in Kannada).
Her vachanas are considered among the most intense, radical and beautiful expressions of Shiva-bhakti and nirguna (formless) devotion.
Famous lines
Some of her most powerful vachanas:
“Till the fruit is ripe inside, the skin will not fall off.”
“I am not a woman, nor a man, nor neuter. I am not anyone.”
“You can’t fill a pot that has a hole. My heart has only one hole — for Chenna Mallikarjuna.”
Final merging
She reached Kadalivana (a forest near Srishaila / Srisailam, Andhra Pradesh).
There, in deep meditation, she completely merged into Lord Shiva / disappeared into divine light.
Many believe she attained mukti (liberation) while still in her physical body.
Why she is so revered today
Symbol of complete surrender and fearless devotion
One of the earliest recorded women in India who rejected patriarchy, caste, clothing norms, and societal rules for the sake of spiritual truth
Her vachanas are still sung, studied and considered among the greatest works of Kannada literature and Lingayat philosophy
She is usually depicted with:
Long flowing hair covering her body
A small pot of water (kamandalu)
A trident or linga in hand
Eyes closed in ecstasy or gazing at Shiva
