The Cost of a Faithful Voice
From Mark 6:14-29
Proclaiming truth will eventually collide with power. John’s story reveals the cost of a faithful voice.
1. A Guilty Conscience Cannot Be Silenced
Mark 6:14–16
John had confronted Herod’s sin, and instead of repenting, Herod silenced the messenger. But removing John did not remove the truth.
Key Lesson
Sin that is not repented of will eventually haunt the conscience.
Proverbs 28:1“The wicked flee when no one pursues.”
Truth to Remember
You can silence the messenger…but you cannot silence the truth.
2. Truth Applied to Real Sin
Mark 6:17–18
John confronted Herod directly about taking Herodias, his brother’s wife.
John did not preach vague morality.
He applied God’s truth to real sin.
Key Lesson
Faithfulness means speaking truth even when it is uncomfortable.
God’s Word:
Comforts the humble
Confronts the proud
Calls people to repentance
Truth to Remember - Influence is not the goal. Faithfulness is.
3. Hearing Truth Without Repenting
Mark 6:19–20
Key Lesson
Conviction without repentance eventually leads to hardness of heart. Many people enjoy hearing truth but resist allowing it to change their lives.
4. Pride in the Wrong Environment
Mark 6:21–25
Key Lesson
Many spiritual disasters begin with a moment of pride in the wrong environment.
When we care more about people’s approval than God’s truth, compromise follows.
5. Weak Leadership Chooses Reputation Over Righteousness
Mark 6:26–28
Key Lesson
Pride will convince us that protecting our image is more important than doing what is right.
6. Faithfulness Is the True Measure of Success
Mark 6:29
John’s disciples buried his body.
No miracle rescue.
No escape.
Just a faithful man who finished his assignment.
John had already said:
John 3:30“He must increase, but I must decrease.”
Key Lesson
The world measures success by:
Followers
Platforms
Recognition
Comfort
But the Kingdom measures success by one word: Faithfulness.
John did not finish comfortable.
John finished faithful.
Personal Reflection Questions:
Is there an area in my life where conviction has been present but repentance has not happened yet?
Do I enjoy hearing truth more than I actually obey it?
Am I ever tempted to compromise truth because of the environment I’m in?
Where might God be calling me to be more faithful, even if it costs something?
If your life ended today, would it be defined more by comfort or faithfulness?
