But don’t let the label fool you, as this issue is more complex than the classifications the governments give each child.

Children crossing alone illegally is becoming a common sight across the U.S. border. The man who captured this video on the Juarez – El Paso Texas border says he cried as he watched them enter the U.S. illegally. Once they are apprehended, on this side, these children are labeled unaccompanied minors.

"So at that point when we encounter a juvenile whether it's part of a family or an unaccompanied juvenile, you know, that becomes the priority, making sure that child is cared for and taken care of," says Chief Matthew Hudak, Customs and Border Protection Laredo.

Meet 4-year-old “Monica,” she was labeled as an unaccompanied minor more than 10 days ago even though she entered with her aunt near Brownsville, Texas according to her attorney.

“The aunt and the cousin were forced back into Mexico and border patrol kept the little girl. The aunt gave Border Patrol her mother's contact information. A copy of her birth certificate and her vaccination records and crickets nobody heard anything when the aunt got back to Mexico, she called the mother to let her know that border patrol had her child," says Amy Maldonado, Immigration Attorney.

Both of “Monica’s” parents have been in Maryland for more than 2 years legally going through their asylum process. When the child’s guardian in Guatemala died, they asked an aunt to bring the child with her to the U.S.

"I was available 24 hours to go pick her up because I was so worried," Monica’s mother.

“Mari Carmen,” says she and her husband offered to fly to Texas to pick up their child who was being held in the Rio Grande valley at the Donna camp, but that did not happen according to them.
