Pruneyard Shopping Center v. Robins (1980) was a U.S. Supreme Court case that established that states can grant broader free speech rights under their own constitutions than the U.S. Constitution provides, allowing for peaceful speech and petitioning in privately owned shopping centers open to the public, as long as it doesn't unreasonably infringe on the owner's property rights. The Court ruled that California could require the PruneYard center to allow high school students to solicit signatures for a petition, as this was a reasonable restriction and not a "taking" of the owner's property.
