In 1965, the McAteer-Petris Act was signed into law, creating a coastal management agency that changed the fate of the Bay. This was the culmination of an extraordinary grassroots effort that was the first of its kind in the nation. Led by three women, the Save San Francisco Bay Association was instrumental in getting the Act passed, and laid the groundwork for future environmental movements.
