Seniors: The Simple Exercise that Cures Dizziness
You bend down to tie your shoes, and the room spins. You roll over in bed, and suddenly you feel like you are on a boat. This isn't just "part of aging." For millions of seniors, this spinning sensation is caused by tiny calcium crystals in the inner ear that have been knocked out of place. This condition is called BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo), and no amount of medication will fix it. The only cure is gravity.
In this video, we teach you the Epley Maneuver—the "magical" sequence of head movements that acts like a puzzle game for your ears. It guides those loose crystals back into the chamber where they belong, stopping the dizziness instantly.
We also explain the difference between "Vertigo" (spinning) and "Lightheadedness" (fainting), and why knowing the difference can save your life. We guide you through the Brandt-Daroff exercises for general balance and reveal the Vitamin D connection that keeps those crystals from breaking loose in the first place.
(Video Notes)
1. The Mechanism: Ear Crystals (BPPV) Your inner ear has 3 loops (Semicircular Canals) filled with fluid. They tell your brain how your head is moving.
The Glitch: Sometimes, tiny calcium stones (Otoliths) fall into these loops. When you move your head, these stones roll around, pushing the fluid and telling your brain you are spinning even when you are still.
The Fix: We must physically rotate the head in a specific sequence to roll the stones out of the loop and back into the central chamber (Utricle) where they stick and stay put.
2. The Test: Which Ear is It? You need to know if the crystals are in the Left or Right ear.
The Method: Sit on a bed. Turn your head 45 degrees to the Right. Lie back quickly so your head hangs slightly off the edge. If you get dizzy, it's the Right Ear. If not, try the Left.
3. The Cure: The Epley Maneuver Once you know the bad side (e.g., Right Ear), do this:
Step 1: Sit on the bed. Turn head 45 degrees to the Right.
Step 2: Lie back quickly (head off edge). Wait 30 seconds (dizziness will happen).
Step 3: Turn head 90 degrees to the Left (without lifting it). Wait 30 seconds.
Step 4: Roll your whole body to the Left so you are looking at the floor. Wait 30 seconds.
Step 5: Sit up slowly. The crystals are now cleared.
4. The Maintenance: Brandt-Daroff Exercises If the Epley feels too intense, this is a gentler option to habituate the brain.
The Move: Sit on the edge of the bed. Flop down to your Right side. Look up. Wait 30 seconds. Sit up. Flop down to your Left side. Look up. Wait 30 seconds.
The Routine: Repeat this 5 times in a row, twice a day, until the dizziness is gone.
5. The Prevention: Vitamin D & Hydration
The Science: Studies show that seniors with recurrent BPPV are often deficient in Vitamin D. The crystals are made of calcium carbonate. Without enough Vitamin D, they become weak and fragment easily.
Hydration: The fluid in your inner ear becomes thick (viscous) if you are dehydrated, making it harder for crystals to move properly. Drink water!

Stroke Warning: If your dizziness is accompanied by Double Vision, Slurred Speech, or Numbness in the arm/face, this is NOT ear crystals. This could be a Stroke. Call 911 immediately. Do not perform these exercises if you have severe neck injuries or cervical instability.
