Today, we’re exploring the long abandoned and decaying Burgess Battery Plant in Niagara Falls, Ontario.  This building was established in 1923 and operated in various capacities until 2004, today the building sits in ruins.

The Burgess Battery Company was founded in Madison, Wisconsin in 1917 by Dr. Charles Burgess, a professor at the University of Wisconsin. 

Two Canadian plants were built in Winnipeg and Niagara Falls. The Niagara Falls plant operated from 1923-1981, though an old calendar hanging inside the ruins shows there were on-site operations of some kind here until 2004. 

In Niagara Falls, the Burgess factory, the infamous Cyanamid plant and International Silver became surrounded by houses of workers who found it handy to live almost right next door to the plants, giving rise to the entire manufacturing-worker suburb known to this day as Silvertown

Burgess was a prolific inventor who, among many other accomplishments, developed what were to become today’s A, B, C and D-cell batteries. 

By 1925, the company was among the largest producers of dry-cell batteries in the world.. Burgess hit financial difficulties in the 1970s with a large anti-monopoly law suit, and went under in 1989 after being bought out by Mallory Battery – now known as Duracell.
