San Juan’s forts, located in Puerto Rico, are historic military structures built by the Spanish to defend the city from attacks by sea. The two most prominent are Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal.
El Morro (built starting in 1539) guards the entrance to San Juan Bay and features thick walls, dungeons, and sweeping ocean views. It was designed to protect against naval invasions.
San Cristóbal (completed in 1783) is one of the largest forts built by the Spanish in the Americas. It was constructed to defend the city from land-based attacks.
Both forts are part of the San Juan National Historic Site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and are admired for their impressive architecture and panoramic vistas.
