For four days in late December 2024, we set out on a road trip with Leslie Gulch and Succor Creek State Natural Area in southeastern Oregon as our destination. We take beautiful high desert routes through Nevada on the way there and back, and pick up my mom in Reno to join us.
Both areas are remote to begin with, but in late December are magnificently empty. Dirt roads and some large puddles of unknown depth make for some harrowing driving at times, but we make it out and live to tell about it.
On the way home in some Oregon rain, we also stop by the Pete French Round Barn, which is a state historic site, and meet its resident owl.
